100 Dessus Dessous
December 10 - 21th, 2007 - 8th edition at La Villette

WE [CAN] CHANGE THE WORLD

Now in its’ 8th edition, 100 Dessus Dessous is aimed at all those who believe:
– that we can still have inventive, pointless and emancipating collective adventures, without being retrograde hippies,
– that appearing on a TV set at peak hour to give one’s opinion cannot be taken as a sure sign of success,
– that we can talk about theatre without quoting authors every second sentence,
– that ending your sentences with the word "motherfucker" doesn’t make you a contemporary poet,
– that the world is not just a Western world and that there are lots of people in other places too,
– that not everything can be explained or measured, which leaves a lot of play room for all types of interpretations, even the most absurd,
– that there are still some healthy utopias remaining, and not just futile angers.

In brief, an event dedicated to all of you who just want to take a little break, and let yourselves go to all sorts of things surprising, excessive, insignificant and a bit derisory. A snapshot of the current state of the world. Frédéric Mazelly

50th anniversary of the West Side Story creation
live in english from November 20th at the Théatre du Chatelet

West Side Story is a musical written by Arthur Laurents (book), Leonard Bernstein (music), and Stephen Sondheim (lyrics). The story is based loosely on Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, which was, in turn, based on a narrative poem by Arthur Brooke entitled The Tragicall Historye of Romeus and Juliet (1562).

Set on Manhattan's Upper West Side, the musical explores the rivalry between two teenage gangs of different ethnic and cultural backgrounds. The young protagonist, Anton ("Tony"), who belongs to the white gang, falls in love with Maria, the sister of the leader of the rival Puerto Rican gang. The dark theme, sophisticated music, extended dance scenes, and focus on social problems marked a turning point in American musical theater. Bernstein's score for the musical has become extremely popular; it includes "Something's Coming", "Maria", "America," "Somewhere," "Tonight", "Jet Song", "I Feel Pretty", "One Hand, One Heart", and "Cool".

The original 1957 Broadway production, directed and choreographed by Jerome Robbins and produced by Robert E. Griffith and Harold Prince, marked Stephen Sondheim's Broadway debut. It ran for 732 performances (a successful run for the time), before going on tour. The production garnered a Tony Award nomination for Best Musical in 1957, but the award ultimately went to Meredith Willson's The Music Man. The show has enjoyed an even longer-running London production, a number of revivals and international success, and spawned an innovative, award-winning 1961 musical film of the same name.

The Berbers Crazy Nights are back at the Cabaret Sauvage. This is happening somewhere between Algiers and Marrakech, Parc de la Villette, the Parisian winter can't do without it, the most diverse public know how it breathes joy, surprise… and coriander soup ! It's called "The Berber Crazy Nights," and it's at the Cabaret Sauvage in November!

Karim Ziad, Hassan Idbasaid and Abdenour Djemai will be the Maestro of these Berbers Crazy Nights.
They're cooking a team of 8 for their toes, their rhythmic articulation and sensual flexibility, and there goes the fantasia!
They're coming from everywhere: acrobats, dancers from all latitudes, trapezist crazy loops... You'll suddenly discover that the dancer is that cashier you met just a moment ago and that your neighbor is making a quite convincing contortionist !
