Al Lewis and Willy Clark, two inseparable legends of the golden age of American comedy television are more known as The Sunshine Boys, title of the TV show still alive in the memory of every American watching them with delight for half a century. Even then, their disputes were going over and over again: Al is as much irascible and difficult as Willy is reasonable and arranging and little by little they got really mad at each other after Willy retired after a 43 years career ! So when a producer offers them to go back on stage to resume their legendary duo what can happen ? The salary is attractive, so once again they are acting before the cameras, but both sexagenarian blow their fuses and resumes their well oiled routine, for our greatest pleasure.
The Flemish company adapt the New York vaudeville, a classic of this genre with all its good tricks, his usual gags, but with the sauce "Marius" and managed with a minimum of means and good actors to stage this great sketch, real verbal tennis, hilarious comic joust bringing us to tear with laughters. I'd seen and shown some of Lech's Kowalski's early films, all so steeped in the atmosphere of NY's Lower East Side that it was startling to meet him for the first time only in Paris in 2002. We chatted, our wives chatted, and we mentioned we were heading off to Kabul to try to show movies to kids who, thanks to Taliban rule, had never seen them before. He displayed some mild interest about the idea. But when he actually showed up at Roissy a few days later we couldn't have been more surprised - things just don't happen that quickly in France.
