100 Dessus Dessous
December 10 - 21th, 2007 - 8th edition at La Villette

WE [CAN] CHANGE THE WORLD

Now in its’ 8th edition, 100 Dessus Dessous is aimed at all those who believe:
– that we can still have inventive, pointless and emancipating collective adventures, without being retrograde hippies,
– that appearing on a TV set at peak hour to give one’s opinion cannot be taken as a sure sign of success,
– that we can talk about theatre without quoting authors every second sentence,
– that ending your sentences with the word "motherfucker" doesn’t make you a contemporary poet,
– that the world is not just a Western world and that there are lots of people in other places too,
– that not everything can be explained or measured, which leaves a lot of play room for all types of interpretations, even the most absurd,
– that there are still some healthy utopias remaining, and not just futile angers.

In brief, an event dedicated to all of you who just want to take a little break, and let yourselves go to all sorts of things surprising, excessive, insignificant and a bit derisory. A snapshot of the current state of the world. Frédéric Mazelly

Piaf, une vie en rose (and black)
at the Cirque d'Hiver until January 5th

A new musical explores the life of one of France's most emblematic singers.

Edith Piaf, born Édith Giovanna Gassion, may have died nearly 45 years ago, but her instantly recognisable voice and trademark songs are still played on the radio today, and following the film "La Vie En Rose" (see trailer below) which tells her tumultuous life story, there is now a new stage show called La Vie et Rose Et Noir.

For foreign visitors especially, Piaf represents a certain image of France, the war, optimism in the face of adversity... For example, you may not know that she gave birth to a daughter when only 17, only to lose the baby to meningitis two years later, that she met the love of her life - a professional boxer - in New York, and that he died in a plane crash whilst coming to see her in Paris, that Marlene Dietrich was a witness at one of her later marriages, that she went into detox (for morphine) in 1953, that Charles Aznavour was her driver and secretary, that at age 47 she married a man over 20 years younger than herself...

Quite a life!

The new musical now tells her story at the Cirque d'Hiver - itself a magnificent building, filled with red velvet, often used as an indoor circus. If you fancy a night of French nostalgia in a beautiful setting during your stay in Paris, this could be the show for you!

The Neil Simon's Sunshine Boys
until December 15th, 2oo7 at the Athénée théâtre Louis-Jouvet

Al Lewis and Willy Clark, two inseparable legends of the golden age of American comedy television are more known as The Sunshine Boys, title of the TV show still alive in the memory of every American watching them with delight for half a century. Even then, their disputes were going over and over again: Al is as much irascible and difficult as Willy is reasonable and arranging and little by little they got really mad at each other after Willy retired after a 43 years career ! So when a producer offers them to go back on stage to resume their legendary duo what can happen ? The salary is attractive, so once again they are acting before the cameras, but both sexagenarian blow their fuses and resumes their well oiled routine, for our greatest pleasure.

The Flemish company adapt the New York vaudeville, a classic of this genre with all its good tricks, his usual gags, but with the sauce "Marius" and managed with a minimum of means and good actors to stage this great sketch, real verbal tennis, hilarious comic joust bringing us to tear with laughters. Hoots of laughters ahead!

Rencontres Internationales de Cinéma à Paris
A cool film festival in Paris
27th November - 4th Décember 2007

If you thought cinema was just sitting back in a dark room for 90 minutes, think again. The 13th edition of the Rencontres Internationales de Cinéma à Paris is a chance to not only discover new cinema, but also meet the people behind it and participate in discussions that give the - dare I say it - wider picture.

For example, Todd Haynes will be present for a pre-release screening of his Dylan concept-bio pic I'm Not There, in which six different actors portray the iconic singer, and a leçon de cinéma where he we be talking about his body of work and answering question from the public. Have a look at the international trailer for I'm Not There...

TODD HAYNES

Few directors have established a reputation like Todd Haynes' in such a short time. Few directors have displayed such eclecticism, brilliance and impressive mastery in just five films. And few have been capable of moving with such virtuosity from Jean Genet's world to Douglas Sirk's or Bob Dylan's. Few directors can pride themselves on having both a remarkable talent from screenwriting and a mind-blowingly inventive sense of mise-en-scene. Few directors have the talent to make us rediscover, film after film, the immeasurable pleasure of being a cinema spectator. The unique joy of being immersed in a highly original world so rich in inspiration, poetry and intelligence, that it restores your confidence in the magic of the silver screen for a long time. Finally, few directors show as much generosity and simplicity as he does. Of course, you could forever envy Todd Haynes for being blessed with so many talents. But for precisely the same reasons, you can also be an absolute fan of his. Xavier Leherpeur journalist

Underground filmmaker Lech Kowalski will be present for screenings of nine of his films, there's a pre-release screening of the the new Ken Loach drama It's a Free World, and a cycle of young Romanian cinema will also be shown. There are also a couple of workshops about how to get a film made for less than 1 million euros, and how to develop a script that will interest producers and financiers.

LECH KOWALSKI

I'd seen and shown some of Lech's Kowalski's early films, all so steeped in the atmosphere of NY's Lower East Side that it was startling to meet him for the first time only in Paris in 2002. We chatted, our wives chatted, and we mentioned we were heading off to Kabul to try to show movies to kids who, thanks to Taliban rule, had never seen them before. He displayed some mild interest about the idea. But when he actually showed up at Roissy a few days later we couldn't have been more surprised - things just don't happen that quickly in France.
The next ten days saw us live some unforgettable adventures together. And they showed some key things about Lech, as a a filmmaker and as a man. His uncanny sense of timing - he was always there when he needed to be there, and faded away when he wasn't. His sensitivity to the tiniest, most touching detail - something the harsh surfaces of his films had kept me from appreciating up til then. And, above all, his keen sense of how absurd comedy and stark tragedy live next door to each other in cheap rooms, and get together to try to party.
