Piaf, une vie en rose (and black)
at the Cirque d'Hiver until January 5th

A new musical explores the life of one of France's most emblematic singers.

Edith Piaf, born Édith Giovanna Gassion, may have died nearly 45 years ago, but her instantly recognisable voice and trademark songs are still played on the radio today, and following the film "La Vie En Rose" (see trailer below) which tells her tumultuous life story, there is now a new stage show called La Vie et Rose Et Noir.

For foreign visitors especially, Piaf represents a certain image of France, the war, optimism in the face of adversity... For example, you may not know that she gave birth to a daughter when only 17, only to lose the baby to meningitis two years later, that she met the love of her life - a professional boxer - in New York, and that he died in a plane crash whilst coming to see her in Paris, that Marlene Dietrich was a witness at one of her later marriages, that she went into detox (for morphine) in 1953, that Charles Aznavour was her driver and secretary, that at age 47 she married a man over 20 years younger than herself...

Quite a life!

The new musical now tells her story at the Cirque d'Hiver - itself a magnificent building, filled with red velvet, often used as an indoor circus. If you fancy a night of French nostalgia in a beautiful setting during your stay in Paris, this could be the show for you!
